Frequently Asked Questions
At Lusiravn Maine Coons, we know welcoming a kitten into your family is a big decision, and you may have many questions. Below you’ll find answers to the most common ones about the breed, our kittens, and the adoption process.
How big do Maine Coons get?
Maine Coons are the largest domestic cat breed. Males can reach 8–12 kg and females 5–8 kg, with some growing even larger. Their length (nose to tail tip) can be over 1 meter.
Until what age do Maine Coons grow?
Unlike most cats, Maine Coons grow slowly and usually don’t reach full size until 3–4 years of age.
Do you sell kittens with breeding rights?
Our kittens are placed as beloved family companions and are spayed/neutered before leaving for their new homes. Breeding rights are only considered in rare cases, and only with trusted, established breeders.
What do your kittens eat?
Kittens are raised on a natural, high-quality diet to support healthy growth. We provide full details to new families and recommend continuing with a similar balanced diet.
Why are kittens delivered already spayed/neutered?
Early spay/neuter ensures a safe, quick recovery and helps prevent future health or behavioral issues. It also avoids extra costs and ensures our kittens are not bred without planning or ethics.
Do you provide any health guarantees or support?
Yes. All kittens leave with veterinary health checks, vaccinations, microchip, and pedigree. We offer written health guarantees against hereditary diseases and lifelong support for your kitten.
When can kittens leave for their new homes?
Kittens are ready to join their families at 14 weeks, once they are fully weaned, socialized, and have completed their vaccinations.
Can we visit the cattery before reserving a kitten?
Yes, visits can be arranged by appointment. We love meeting future families, though we take care to protect the health of young kittens and breeding cats.
How do reservations and waiting lists work?
We operate a reservation system, where families can register interest and place a deposit once kittens are available. This ensures fairness and allows us to match kittens to the best homes.
Are Maine Coons good with children and other pets?
Absolutely. Maine Coons are known for their gentle, dog-like personalities. They are affectionate, playful, and adapt well to family life, including with children and other pets.
What is included when I take my kitten home?
Each kitten leaves with:
- Full pedigree and registration papers
- Vaccination record & microchip registration
- Veterinary health certificate
- Starter food pack
- Copies of parents’ health tests
- Spay/neuter confirmation
- Lifetime breeder support
Do Maine Coons need special grooming?
Their long, silky coats require regular brushing (about 2–3 times per week) to prevent tangles. Most Maine Coons enjoy grooming as part of bonding time.
Do Maine Coons really chirp?
Yes! Instead of a typical “meow,” Maine Coons often chirp or trill. It’s part of their unique charm and they use it to communicate with their humans or while watching birds out the window.
Do Maine Coons like water?
Many Maine Coons are fascinated by water. You might find them dipping their paws into their water bowl, joining you at the sink, or even playing with a dripping tap. Some will even hop into the shower uninvited!
Are Maine Coons really like dogs?
In many ways, yes. They are affectionate, loyal, and can even be taught to walk on a harness or play fetch. Their easygoing nature makes them wonderful family companions.
