Maine Coon Cats

The Maine Coon is often called the Gentle Giant of the cat world. With their impressive size, flowing coats, and tufted ears, they look as though they’ve stepped straight out of a northern legend. But behind their majestic appearance lies a playful, affectionate, and deeply loyal companion — a cat that wins hearts everywhere it goes.

  • Size & Appearance
Maine Coons are the largest domestic cat breed, with males sometimes reaching 10–13 kg and over 1 meter in length, including their long, bushy tails. Females are usually smaller, but still strikingly large compared to most cats. Their tufted ears, lynx-like facial features, and heavy coats are adapted for colder climates, giving them a rugged yet elegant presence.
  • Personality & Temperament
Known as gentle, balanced, and sociable, Maine Coons are often compared to dogs in their devotion. They are intelligent, people-oriented, and eager to be part of family life. Many Maine Coons will follow their humans from room to room, “helping” with daily tasks and chatting in their soft, chirping voices.
  • With Children & Other Pets
Maine Coons are patient and playful, making them an excellent choice for families with children. They usually get along well with other cats, and even with dogs, thanks to their calm and tolerant nature.
  • Intelligence & Playfulness
These cats are quick learners — many enjoy playing fetch, solving puzzle toys, or even walking on a leash. Their playful spirit lasts well into adulthood, keeping them kitten-like in energy and curiosity.
  • Care & Needs
Despite their long coats, Maine Coons are not as high-maintenance as they appear. Weekly grooming helps keep their fur in good condition. They thrive best with space to explore, interactive playtime, and plenty of human companionship.
  • Health & Longevity
Maine Coons typically live 12–15 years. As with any breed, responsible breeding practices are essential to minimize hereditary conditions such as HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy), SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy), and PKDef. At Lusiravn, careful health testing ensures our kittens begin life with the strongest foundation.
  • History & Legends
The exact origins of the Maine Coon are surrounded by myths — from seafaring cats brought by Vikings to tales of cats crossing with raccoons (impossible, but the name stuck). What we do know is that the breed developed naturally in North America, becoming an official state cat of Maine and beloved worldwide for its resilience and charm.
